How to Do Inexpensive DIY Kitchen Table Update Now

Today, I am sharing my cheap & easy DIY update to my round kitchen table! It’s a super simple way to update how your kitchen table and chairs look with polewrap, spray paint, and upholstery fabric! This works great for small tables and round tables!

A quick disclaimer before we get started…

In order for me to appear in google searches, I am required to put a certain amount of transition words (e.g., firstly, additionally, lastly, etc.)… Unfortunately, fluff words are NOT my strength… Remember, I am a pharmacist… not a writer… Therefore, I would like to apologize in advance for my random and awkwardly placed transition words… I’m just trying TO GET GOOGLE TO NOTICE ME!

EMPHATICALLY, let’s get started (see… there is the first random transition word).

This is what I was starting out with….

I wanted a more mature look without having to buy a new table and chairs. So I replaced the table base, spray painted the chairs, and reupholstered the chair cushions.

HENCEFORTH, I have broken the process up into 2 main steps: building the table base and updating the chairs.

Build Kitchen Table Base

1. TO BEGIN WITH, cut 2×4 to desired table height
2. SUBSEQUENTLY stain round boards with desired stain.

Cassie Tips:

  • A key way to make your home look cohesive is to use some repetition. So if you have a particular stain that you have used in other areas of your home, I would consider using that if it would look good in this area so you can keep that cohesive look!
  • If I had to do it over again, I would probably have used a pre-stain conditioner to get a more even stain.
3. ADDITIONALLY cut pole wrap to be the same height as the 2×4
  • When I am cutting long boards, I put my drill box under the board (see image below).
  • FYI: polewrap is huge in the DIY world right now, so check out the polewrap DIY projects below!
4. SUBSEQUENTLY, glue the 2×4 board to the bottom round board for the table framework.
  • Before I glued it, I used my level to make sure the table would be level (to see if I needed to make any adjustments to the 2×4 before I glued it).
  • I marked the middle point of the board with a pencil from multiple different angles of the round board to make sure I wasn’t gluing it completely off center.
  • I used Gorilla Max Strength Clear Construction Adhesive to glue the 2×4 to the bottom round board (not gluing the top round board until after the next step).

5. AFTERWARDS, attach the pole wrap to the table base framework.

  • Since the round boards were not flat on the edges, I cut up a square wood dowel 48″ x 1/2″ into small pieces that I had leftover from my bathroom vanity update (see 00:41 in my video on YouTube to see what I am talking about)
  • I glued them to the edges of the round boards using Gorilla Max Strength Clear Construction Adhesive. The purpose of this step was so that there was something to make sure the polewrap stayed around the edges of the table base since there wasn’t a good place to attach it to the round edge of the round boards (you wouldn’t have to do this if you found round boards that were flat around the edges).
6. THEN, I glued the top round board to the table base.
  • While the glue was still wet, I check that it was level with my level AGAIN just to be safe that I wouldn’t end up with a slanted table.
  • I put some books on top of it to put some pressure on it while it dried.
7. AFTERWARDS, I attached the polewrap to the table base.
8 . FINALLY, stain the pole wrap with desired stain
  • I used the same stain that I used for the round boards to stain

Update Kitchen Table Chairs

1. FIRST, remove chair cushions
  • For most chairs, there are screws that are attaching the chair seat/cushion to the chair legs. For mine, I just turned the chair on its side and unscrewed those screws to remove the chair cushions.
2. SECONDLY, spray paint chairs

  • IMPORTANTLY, I use the Krylon handle linked above to make it easier to spray for a prolonged period of time
  • ADDITIONALLY, I use the respiratory mask to avoid inhaling the fumes—which is not something to take lightly, it has given me TERRIBLE bloody noses in the past!
  • ALSO, you can see in my video on YouTube  (01:22) that I am wearing a raincoat with a hood and trying to completely cover myself since spray painting can be messy. Alternatively, you can use this disposable suit so you don’t have to worry about it!
  • FINALLY, I used a portable spray paint shelter since I only have a tiny balcony and it makes the cleanup A LOT easier
3. SUBSEQUENTLY, remove the current upholstery fabric (if applicable)
  • I used a VERCCA Heavy Duty Upholstery Tool to help me remove the staples. Most staple guns will have something on the back to help you remove the staples, but mine was too flexible, so it wasn’t doing a good job of removing the staples.
  • Side note: Look how cute my cat is trying to learn how to reupholster seat cushions.
  • I know what you are thinking, that’s not a bad seat cushion. I tested it out to see if I liked how it looked with the black spray painted chair and I didn’t like it (see image below).
4. AFTERWARDS, cut upholstery fabric to cushion size
  • I am sure there is probably a more precise way to do this, but I just place the cushion on the fabric to see where to cut.
  • I basically treat reupholstering cushions like wrapping gifts.
5. SUBSEQUENTLY, iron the upholstery fabric (if needed)
  • I am terrible at ironing, so I struggled a little here. But if you know how to iron, the Amazon reviews said that it’s supposedly easy to iron out on a low steam setting.
6. LASTLY, reupholster the cushions
  • I am by no means a professional at reupholstering cushions. I didn’t read up on this or anything. I felt it was low risk, so I just winged it.
  • Again, I treat it like wrapping a present. So I place the cushion on the fabric and I fold over the edge on one side and instead of taping it down, I staple it down.
  • Keep going around the edge stapling the fabric to the cushion.
  • When you get to the corner, I cut off the extra fabric to remove the amount of fabric I need to try to fold over (I do the same thing when I wrap gifts).
  • I did a similar thing when I got to the other corner, except I cut it more like a square so that the part I was about the fold over (on the flat edge of the cushion) could easily fold over without having to overlap a lot of fabric.

ANYHOW, that’s it! It’s a super easy update that anyone can do and it’s very affordable!
