From hanging plants to stylish seating options and patio decor ideas, this article will show you how to transform your outdoor space from dull to delightful in no time.
Last summer, I bought these interlocking wood tiles and artificial grass tiles for my patio. Then, I got an outdoor patio set that could hide additional seating within itself. Check out my blog post about it for more details. Now, I am looking to step up my balcony game even more!

What We’ll Go Over To Upgrade Your Patio Decor & Design
I’ll walk you through some of my favorite:
- Balcony / patio furniture
- Balcony / patio floor options
- Privacy screen ideas and my plans for my balcony

Outdoor Furniture
First, I like to start with furniture since it will most likely take up the most space on your balcony / patio. Obviously, the furniture you choose depends on the space you have available.
Personally, I have a decent size balcony, but it’s not the biggest. So, I got “space-saving” outdoor furniture that stores additional seating within itself. The specific one I bought is currently unavailable on Amazon.
Outdoor Chairs
If you have a pretty small balcony / patio and only want to have a chair or two, there are a lot of nice options for that.
Especially, tear drop hanging chairs have become more popular recently.
Outdoor Loveseats or Couches
Furthermore, some alternative options are smaller outdoor loveseat or couch options. For example, here are some pins of a balcony that could only fit an outdoor loveseat.
Outdoor Balcony / Patio Couch Sets or Sectionals
Alternatively, if you have a large patio or a bigger balcony, you could go for matching couch and loveseat sets or an outdoor sectional sort of option.
Outdoor Eating Areas
On the other hand, if you plan on entertaining or eating out on your balcony or patio, there are options like bar-type seating for smaller areas.
Conversely, if you have the space, then you could also do larger outdoor dining tables.
Balcony / Patio Decor & Design Floor Options
Equally important, there are quite a few options for the flooring for your balcony or patio. I personally do not like the idea of having to clean up any dirt or gunk that can accumulate under an outdoor rug, so I prefer outdoor tiles that are self-draining and don’t have that sort of accumulation.
Likewise, they also have artificial grass tiles if you want to add more of the plant aesthetic to your balcony or patio!
Personally, I did a combination of the outdoor tiles and grass for my small balcony!
Conversely, if you prefer an area rug, there are a lot of outdoor options for that as well!
Balcony / Patio Outdoor Decor Privacy Screens
First, I have an ugly gray/silver wall that I would like to cover (see image below). It seems like some sort of metal and it’s not exactly easy to attach stuff to. Since I live in a condo, I am limited in terms of what I can do to the exterior of the building (aka, my balcony), so I have to find a solution that is not permanent and basically rental friendly.
Therefore, I am basically going to make a privacy screen that I will use my outdoor love seat to hold up against that wall.
I plan to make the a DIY privacy screen that looks similar to this privacy screen shown below.
However, I also want to weave some sort of vine through it to provide a bit more nature into it, similar to this Pinterest pin.
On the other hand, there are a lot of cool privacy screens that you can just buy if you don’t want to make your own!
Since I love the idea of bringing that plant-look up the wall with plant tiles, here is an example to showcase what I mean.
Moreover, you can also use actual plants to make your own privacy screen.
Balcony / Patio Decor Ideas & Inspiration
There are so many outdoor decor options these days! One of the first important things to think about is lighting.
Outdoor Lighting
To start, one of the most common lighting for balconies and patios are these lightbulb string lights.
Luckily, if you do not have an outlet available on your balcony or patio, then they also have solar powered ones!
Additionally, there are actually quite a bit of different solar powered light options available!
Furthermore, if you are like me and have a cement balcony, then you can get these lights that typically go in the ground and put them inside planters!
Conversely, another option would be to buy illuminated planters!
Outdoor Fire Pit
Secondly, another thing to think about is if you want a fire pit. Especially if you are lower to the ground and want to try to avoid mosquitoes; or if you get chilly at night and want to be able to have a heat source; or maybe you just really like s’mores. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On the other hand, if you don’t want to pay for one of those big ones or if you don’t have the space, there is also a wide variety of tabletop fire pits.
Balcony / Patio Decor Plant Ideas
Outside of lighting and fire pits, there are a lot of different decor options. One of the most important types of patio decor is plants. It’s a great way to modernize your balcony or patio, while incorporating nature into your home! You can go with real plants or if you are like me and don’t want to have to worry about watering them and maintenance, then you can go with artificial plants.
However, if you do decide to go with real plants, make sure to make sure to check that they are not toxic to your pets if you have any!
Outdoor Patio Decor Planters
Of course, you cannot have plants without planters to help complete the look!
On top of that, it’s good to make sure you are planning out how you will fill the space around the plant in the planter.
Right now, moss and rocks are very popular!
Additional Outdoor Balcony / Patio Decor
Lastly, there are a lot of small touches that you can add to your balcony or patio decor that will help take it to the next level!
I also highly recommend creating a mood board like I did to help make sure you are creating a cohesive look!
